Fly Me to the Moon Research

  This is an update to this blog entry Date 17/12/2022. Kevin from Pianote did a presentation on How to Harmonise a song and chose Fly me to the moon to demonstrate principles and technique. Couldn't believe my luck. The following, from Lance B, and link shows the various techniques...1/3rds, 1/6ths and block chords. This last week when i was practicing it for the recital to get it faster (🙄), I started to have an inkling that my approach to  learning  a piece was wrong. Kevin had shown a walking bass line for FMTTM in that week's Piano Bench, and I though that's something I'll add when I eventually perfect this version.   So today he used FMTTM to show like five different kinds of harmonizing you can do. Right there it really clicked for me that the song isn't a piece to perfect, it's a structural skeleton to hang all the techniques on to. It has chords and a melody, and once those are internalized, I can just play it with whatever techniques and skill I have....

Tidy Up Hac

My  work place is a mess. So I determined to do something about it. I've tried all sorts of filing systems. My main problem is that if I file things I am working on, I soon forget them, they end up at the bottom of a pile or in a folio or cabinet, or draw, gathering dust. If I keep documents electronically, same thing.. my filing disciplines are just not up to it. So, all my charts and research papers etc are spread out on tables and chairs or any available horizontal surface quietly awaiting a door to be blown open in a wind gust. The result.. well. my solution...go vertical ... I got a bunch of manilla foolscap document wallets, folded and inserted them into each other to make discreate pockets, a bit of plywood, clamps, easel.. it works.  That's the prototype. Will tidy up the design at a later date. Now back to piano practice.

Term 2 Week 4

Major focus this month: Rhythm and Timing.  Bossa Nova Comping: --> before playing this, in fact every piece, develop the habit of counting in . This will set the tempo and set me up for a strong groove. - record myself doing this to see if i can hear the tempo stay steady or if i tend to speed up/slow down! It Could Happen To You Chet Solo:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSkHz5trdhc -> using this piece to develop a focus timing and fingering and an intro to scat singing. -    play along with the recording when timing and fingering is down. --> Settings - Play Back Speed - 0.75 -    sing along with Chet too without playing! This is a great solo to get in my head and this will ultimately help my rhythm. Blue Bossa: Focussing on the beat 1 of the melody - RH only --> play along with Ireal! --> turn drums up in preference to the click. This helps lock in the groove.
