Term 2 Week 4

Major focus this month: Rhythm and Timing.  Bossa Nova Comping: --> before playing this, in fact every piece, develop the habit of counting in . This will set the tempo and set me up for a strong groove. - record myself doing this to see if i can hear the tempo stay steady or if i tend to speed up/slow down! It Could Happen To You Chet Solo:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSkHz5trdhc -> using this piece to develop a focus timing and fingering and an intro to scat singing. -    play along with the recording when timing and fingering is down. --> Settings - Play Back Speed - 0.75 -    sing along with Chet too without playing! This is a great solo to get in my head and this will ultimately help my rhythm. When we are in a situation like a jam session or a gig, it’s good to know few common ways to end the tune.  The Basic 251 Ending First we will talk about the basic 251 ending and how it is commonly used to end a tune. The 251 ending is found in the majority of jazz standards written in both major and minor keys.  To make an outro, we can play the 2 & 5 chords, but instead of going to 1 chords, we would play the 3 half diminished chord, then 6 dominant chord which takes us back to 2, then 5, and again 3 instead of 1. Maybe next term we can get through a bit more if you want to have a 45min or hour lesson, something to discuss with Ben and Deb maybe :) -->Love how you're working through the chord progressions 1 6 2 5,etc. - this is what a lot of jazz musicians do --> practising specific progressions that can be inserted into so many different jazz standards :) - attached is the 2-5-1 exercise sheet to start getting this progression (as a starting point) under your fingers in all 12 keys, going around the cycle of 4ths: - start with root position chords then the next step could be gradually adding inversion.
